Program Description

Description

Susan Hill leads a presentation on Elsie Singmaster Lewars (1879-1958) who lived in Gettysburg for much of her adult life.  Her novels and short stories were published widely by Houghton Mifflin Company and by well-known literary journals and popular magazines like Atlantic Monthly, Harper’s, and The Saturday Evening Post.  Her novel about a Gettysburg family during the Civil War, Swords of Steel, (1933) was an honor book for the 1934 Newbery Award. Though accomplished personally and professionally in her time, few Adams Countians know of Singmaster today.  Come and make her acquaintance!
