In 2021, the Adams County Library System has come quite a long way into creating a new normal for our 21st century library!  We started the year open for business, but with all virtual programs.  While we are still offering some online programming, as of September, the libraries have all reintroduced some in-person programming with masks required.  We are so happy to invite everyone back, but still feel precautions are best for the safety of our staff and visitors.
Our printed three-month calendar “What’s Happening” is available at every branch or you can view it on our website,  With many programs available throughout the county, you are sure to find a pleasant way to spend some time with us.  We have also noticed many library users returning to the libraries to use the public computers and free wifi.  Welcome back!
I hope that you were able to enjoy several of our programs over the past year.  We started the year with all virtual programs and end the year with a mix of in-person and virtual offerings.  Many programs are available, some in virtual format, others as in-person programs.  This mix of programming seems to suit all comfort levels.
In October, I spoke with a frequent visitor to the Gettysburg branch who was thoroughly enjoying the Adams County Reads One Book programs.  She attended both in-person and virtual programs and appreciated being able to participate.  Several other library users raved about the excellent public service they have received at our branch libraries.  These comments are shared and appreciated by our staff members!
The staff that you see or talk to every day are truly the heart of the library.  Over the past year, these dedicated employees have continued to provide excellent public service.  Staff in all branches work as a team to provide information, materials and programs to Adams County residents.  In-person, over the phone and via email, the staff work to provide information and services to everyone.  There are also staff behind the scene that also provide vital support: selecting materials for rotations to and from branch libraries, checking items in, delivering materials between branches and selecting and ordering new items and making them available to readers, viewers and listeners.
One library user reports that she loves the care that she receives from the staff. Because she has trouble getting around she appreciates the staff pulling the books and having them ready for her husband to pick-up!  It takes a team effort to get those items ready and on the pickup shelf.  Frontline staff pull items from the shelves, behind the scenes staff check them in and put them on the pickup shelf or into delivery if they are needed at another branch.  Delivery drivers move the items from branch to branch and the branch staff put them on the shelf, ready for pickup!
Erica Duffy, Development Director has spoken with many of you recently and reports that so many of you “love the staff at the library and wish them a Merry Christmas!”  Thank you for your continued support and kind words.  Our library advocates, donors and volunteers help us provide library services and materials to all residents of Adams County.  The ACLS is sending you our best wishes for a Happy New Year!
