Did you know? Adams County Library System is governed by a Board of Trustees. The Board manages the property and business affairs and supports the mission and purpose of the Library system. The Board holds a meeting each month with the annual organizational meeting being held each April.
On Thursday, April 22nd the Board met via Zoom to reflect on the previous twelve months (May 2020 – April 2021). Like most organizations, the last twelve months have presented many challenges and hurdles for Adams County Library System (ACLS) to overcome. Thanks to the support from the Board, the Library System has managed to thrive and keep providing the same great service to our patrons that we always have.
When the stay-at-home order was issued last year, the Board was determined to keep everyone safe and all library staff employed so services could continue to be provided. Resolved to continue serving the Library System, the Board quickly adjusted from monthly in-person meetings to hosting and collaborating on Zoom. Thanks to the Paycheck Protection Program, the Board was able to ensure that every single Library employee received a paycheck. While the physical Library branches were closed, the board helped the ACLS maintain its connection with patrons and organizations throughout the community.
The Library system quickly adapted from hosting in-person events, programs, story times, and array of resources to a virtual-only platform. The Library by Mail program which allows patrons who cannot visit the library to still borrow books was expanded. Thanks to generous donations from board members and others in the community, as well as a grant from the Adams County Community Foundation, the Library was able to expand its digital library. The digital library includes e-books, audio books,          e-magazines, music available for streaming, and an online database of resources all available for free at adamslibrary.org to our library card holders.
Thankfully, all branches are now fully open to the public. Special programming is still held online, but patrons are able to come in and browse the shelves during normal business hours. The Library stands out among many libraries in our state as many still have not returned to pre-pandemic hours and services. The Library continues to thrive and meet the needs our ever-changing community thanks to the unwavering support of the Board of Trustees.  Including working to create a consolidated county library system. In December, the Jean Barnett Trone Memorial Library of East Berlin merged with the ACLS, making it a consolidated system with six branches. Trone Memorial Library is continuing to provide the county with excellent service. This branch even has a bookstore developed by the Friends of the Trone Library with heavily discounted books available for purchase, currently open on Mondays and Saturdays from 11:30am – 3:30pm.
ACLS is grateful for the steadfast support of the Board of Trustees. The Board is always looking for support of those that have a profound interest in the well-being of the Library System. Interested in volunteering as an Associate Trustee Board Member for the ACLS? To receive more information, please send an email to adams@adamslibrary.org. Board meetings are held the fourth Thursday of every month and are open to the public.  We hope to see you at our next board meeting!
