Thanks to the Friends of the Adams County Library for the support they have given the Adams County Library System for 60 years!  Over the years, the Friends have worked to support all branches in the System.  Their donations have gone to support library programming and materials for all ages.  The Friends work year-round, raising funds through the Book Store in the Gettysburg Library, memberships, Amazon book sales, special events and the annual summer book sale.
The Friends of the Adams County Library have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 annual book sale.  The Friends value your help in supporting the Library and hope you will all be onboard for the sale in 2021.   Let’s try to make next year the best sale ever!
This was not an easy decision but due to the coronavirus pandemic, there are concerns for the safety of both the shoppers and the volunteers.  Although facemasks could be worn, it would be difficult to social distance within the booksale venue.
The Friends have held a large annual book sale for many years, beginning by using the Library garage in 1993!  The Book Sale outgrew that space and the large summer sale began in 2001 at the Gettysburg Middle School.  The sale has since moved to the field house at Gettysburg College and finally to Redding Auction Services.  Cancelling the 2020 sale is a disappointment as the Friends have worked since August 2019 preparing for their largest fundraiser of the year.   It will be a disappointment as well to the many shoppers who come to the sale to stock up on books they can enjoy reading throughout the year.
The Friends Book Store in the Gettysburg Library is currently closed, but only because the Library System is not yet fully open to the public.  The Bookstore opened in 1992 and we fully anticipate that the store at the Gettysburg Library will reopen once the library can safely open.
Due to the current status of the book sale and book store, the Friends are not accepting donations of books until further notice.
The Board of the Friends of the Library recently accepted the resignations of three longtime board members, President Jim Gardner, Vice President Michele DeLacy and Treasurer Cathy Gardner.
Jim and Cathy Gardner joined the Friends soon after they retired to Gettysburg.  Jim has served as President since 2013.  He was the Book Sale coordinator and facilitated the Friends’ Amazon sales.  Cathy also joined the Friends in 2013, first serving as HIstorian and then as Treasurer.  We thank the Gardners for the many hours spent in service to the Friends over the past seven years.
Thanks also to Michele DeLacy, who joined the Friends Board in 2011 serving as Corresponding Secretary and later as Vice President.  She chaired several springtime fundraisers for the Friends and has also been a Library System volunteer, serving on the Adams County Reads One Book and Signature Event committees.
As the Friends of the Adams County Library make plans to move forward as we enter a new normal, please consider becoming a member or renewing your membership.  This is an excellent opportunity to show the Friends that you value their importance and their work!  Visit for further information.
