Read Aloud Month

read aloud

February 7th is World Read Aloud Day, and the Adams County Library System is excited to celebrate reading aloud for the entire month of February. Reading stories aloud is a powerful way to connect with others through shared experiences, and this month-long celebration is an excellent opportunity to embrace the importance of literacy. Reading aloud has many benefits, including improved language development, comprehension, imagination, and communication skills. For children, being read to can also foster a lifelong love of reading.

World Read Aloud Day® was founded by LitWorld “ to celebrate the power of reading aloud in creating community and amplifying new stories, and to advocate for literacy as a foundational human right.”  LitWorld is a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening kids and communities through the power of stories.
“3 Reasons to celebrate!   Reading aloud at home and at school is one of the best ways to help children develop literacy skills.  According to research by the University of Melbourne, daily reading aloud to children puts them almost a year ahead of children who do not receive daily read-alouds regardless of income, education level or cultural background. Reading aloud is an incredibly accessible and powerful way to help listeners of all ages build essential literacy skills.  Reading Aloud helps us share stories.  Our stories articulate the ways that we experience the world from our own perspective. Sharing stories is how we learn about the world- how to navigate it, how we define our own place in it, and how to make it better.  Reading Aloud helps us build community.  Sharing stories has always been the way we connect to each other as humans, and finding time to celebrate those connections is important! The stories we share aloud are the stories we value and those stories are the ones that define our history.” https://www.litworld.org/

The Adams County Library System has a variety of programs throughout the month of February that include an opportunity to participate in reading aloud. From storytimes for young children to book clubs for adults, there is something available for everyone. Attend a reading event at your local library and discover the joy of reading aloud!

In addition to these events, the ACLS is also promoting the use of audiobooks as a way to enjoy stories through reading aloud. Audiobooks can be a great way to experience a story, especially for those who may have difficulty reading or who enjoy listening to stories

while they do other activities.
Whether you prefer to read a physical book, listen to an audiobook, or attend a reading event, World Read Aloud Day (or month) is the perfect time to celebrate the joy of reading aloud. So grab a book, gather some friends or family, and read aloud together to celebrate the power of storytelling!
