To snow or not to snow….
When I was a kid, I remember that there would be snow on the ground from November until March. Now, winters seem much milder with only the occasional snowstorm. If you are the owner of a ski resort, you’d think that maybe you should look into another line of business. Advances in machine made snowmaking have saved the day though, and have allowed ski resorts located in areas that have little natural snowfall to stay in business and even prosper.
Here’s the quick version about how snow is made. The two main conditions that need to be in place to make snow are low temperatures (28 degrees or lower is optimal) and low humidity. Cooled water and cooled compressed air are pumped through separate snowmaking pipes up the mountain slopes. These pipes meet at snow guns that are positioned at different points on the slopes. Here, the water and air are mixed and we have snow! This machine made snow, more durable than natural snow, is then groomed to make great skiing conditions. Liberty Mountain has 350 snow guns that can create 1,300 tons of snow per hour and cover 100 percent of the terrain! So, once the cold weather comes to stay, go ahead and hit the slopes. They will be ready for you!
. If you would like to find out more about skiing or other winter sports, our library system has many books and DVDs that you may be interested in checking out. These cold winter days are perfect for curling up with a good book and a cup of hot chocolate! Visit your local library branch or check out our on-line catalog at www.adamslibrary.org to browse our complete collection.
