BUILD A BETTER WORLD @ YOUR LIBRARY

Summer is almost here, and parents all across Adams County will inevitably hear, “I’m bored!”   Never fear - the Adams County Library System is here!  From June 1 through August 5, activities and events for children of all ages will be hosted at the ACLS library near you.

Our theme this year is “Build a Better World,” and each library will have programs that will allow children to participate in building a better world.  Starting June 1, children may register for the Summer Reading Program at your local library.  For each 120 minutes spent reading, children will receive incentives.  This year children will also be asked to complete two fun activities each week.

Be sure not to miss our second annual FunFest kick-off event on Friday, June 9 from 4-7pm at the Gettysburg Rec Park at 545 Long Lane in Gettysburg.  This will be a fun evening of free activities for the entire family.

Throughout the summer there will be storytimes for babies and preschoolers. Children will also be able to read to therapy dogs and design and build things at their local library.  Each library in Adams County will have large group performers such as Grins & Grins: a fast paced variety show that features magic, ventriloquism, whip-cracking, “daring” feats of balance, circus skill and more as well as ScienceTellers: Building Tall Ships & Pirate Tales.  Some libraries will have movie nights and craft days.

The Jean Barnett Trone Memorial Library of East Berlin will have activities specifically for Teens and Tweens.  These activities include Book-to-Movie showings, building with cardboard, story stone making, marshmallow catapult construction, compass making and art bot design.  For those who love Young Adult Fiction, we have a summer book discussion group “Orange Label Readers” who will meet every other Monday beginning June 5 at 3pm .  We will be hosting  a classic movie film festival on Thursday evenings in July.  Also for adults will be our monthly adult book discussion, “Chicks with Sticks” knitting and crochet group, Quilting group, and Card Making group.

To end the summer, Jean Barnett Trone Memorial Library of East Berlin will host a carnival for children who participated in the summer reading program.  The carnival will be on Wednesday, August 2nd from 10:30 to noon at the library.  Games will be created and run by our Teen Advisory Board.

For more information on what is happening at your local library, speak with the staff at that location or visit adamslibrary.org for more details on events.
